The weather in the mountains is all part of its mystique and charm, with each season having its very own characteristics – from the crispness of the winter landscape, to the freshness of spring, the warmth of summer and the distinct colours of autumn.
The weather in the mountains is variable, in the winter the temps can drop well below zero and in the summer it warms up nicely but it rarely ever gets too hot. It is not uncommon to have a sprinkle of snow in the summer months and lots of sunshine in the winter, just make sure you are well prepared for all kinds of weather at anytime of the year.
In some of the villages it can be warm but as you ascend the mountain the temps can drop two or three degrees every 250 metres you climb, so it is a good idea to pack extra layers, nothing too bulky.
If you are out and about in the mountains you must remember you are close to two kilometers above sea level, so sunscreen is a must, as the sun reflects off the snow and bites in those places you never thought of. Re-apply sunscreen regularly and wear a wide brimmed hat for the best protection.
Please contact a local Visitor Centre along the route for up to date details regarding weather in the area.
