Gaden Trout Hatchery

The NSW Government’s Gaden Trout Hatchery, on the Thredbo River, 10 km north-west of Jindabyne, is one of Australia’s main centres for breeding and rearing cold water sport fish.

Four species, rainbow trout, brown trout, brook trout, and Atlantic salmon are produced by Department of Primary Industries at the hatchery for stocking into dams and rivers in the Snowy Mountains, Southern Highlands, Central Tablelands and New England areas to provide quality recreational fishing opportunities.

Over the years the Hatchery has contributed significantly to the recreational fishing and tourism industry of the Snowy Mountains region.

Gaden Trout Hatchery is over 50 years old and is set in beautiful parkland on the banks of the Thredbo River with picnic facilities and coin operated barbeques.

Tours of the Hatchery are approximately 1hour in duration and are available at 10am and 2pm daily. (Closed Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day)

View trout aquariums, visual displays and an informative DVD presentation in the theatrette outlining the hatchery’s purpose and operations, then go for a walk around the grounds with one of the experienced hatchery staff. Discover some of the biggest trout and salmon in the country as they leap to the surface of ponds as they are fed.

Please note that fishing is not permitted at the hatchery.
